INDEPENDENT STUDY PROJECTS BEGIN THIS WEEK!
During the latter half of this semester, you will be undergoing an Independent Study project of your own choosing. This Independent Study will count for half of your Final Exam (10% of your semester grade) and will involve a significant amount of work outside of regular class time. The Independent Study must be approved by Mr. Steptoe, and there will be several progress check-ins as the weeks go by. Your project should strive to expand your musical knowledge and/or ability. Listed below are some ideas to help you generate your project:
- Biographical/Historical literature review (and brief class presentation)
- Composition/Transcription/Creative Project (and performance)
- Class Performance (Solo/Ensemble, with coachings)
- Private Lessons (minimum of three sessions)
- Student Teaching (Elementary/MS/HS) or Student Conducting
- Collaborative project with other academic/arts disciplines
I am very excited to witness the results of your creativity! (Since this is a somewhat open-ended assignment, please see me if any questions arise, and we'll work together to find an appropriate direction for your learning.)

FALL 2016 SEATING AUDITION INFORMATION - CHAMBER ORCHESTRA
All Chamber Orchestra students must take a seating audition during the week of October 3-7. You will sign up for your audition the week before it takes place: Cello/Bass on Monday, Violas on Tuesday, Violins on Wednesday/Thursday, with Friday for those with conflicts. (If you miss or are late to your scheduled audition time, it cannot be made up, so be sure to schedule your audition time wisely.) The following information will help guide your practicing so that you can be prepared and do your best on the audition.
All students will be asked to play each the following:
1) A two-octave chromatic scale, starting on the lowest open string of your instrument.
2) A three-octave major scale and arpeggio of your choice, slurring two notes (three for the arpeggio). The scale may be requested by the teacher to be played either normally or in broken thirds (A confident bow stroke should be used throughout).
3) An excerpt of the Wohlfahrt etude handed out in class. At several points in the etude, you may be asked to incorporate one or more of the bowing patterns given at the top of the page.
4) A solo piece of your choice. This could be taken from Suzuki Books 3-6, or a work of comparable difficulty. Another option would be to compose and perform your own piece, which should be of a similar musical and technical level to a piece in Suzuki Book 3 or higher. If you choose to compose a piece, please have a copy of the music (printed or manuscript) for Mr. Steptoe to use during your audition.
5) Excerpts from your orchestral repertoire - Hatikva, Glazunov's Variations, Schubert's Unfinished, and Schubert's "Death and the Maiden" quartet.
6) A short sightreading excerpt.
In order to have a good audition, you must practice every day towards your goal! I wish you great success.
